So you’ve decided now is the time to pick up a vape. You may have just quit smoking, or even cut down on the amount of cigarettes you use a day. Good choice!
We know that the world of vaping can be a bit daunting and that there is so much for you to think about when you first start vaping. There are different flavours, strengths, coils and techniques for you to find out about.
Well, hopefully that’s something that we can help with.
What is vaping?
First off, let’s crack down on what is vaping before we get onto how to vape. Vaping is the act of inhaling a smoke-like vapour, which is usually flavoured, from a vape device or e-cigarette. Vaping emulates smoking, however, has been found to be 95% less harmful way to get your nicotine needs. It should be noted that there are zero-nicotine vapes available as well if you are looking to remove nicotine from your life for good.
The nicotine and flavourng is found within the vape juice, which is then heated with a coil or heating device within the vape to produce the vapour which is then inhaled. Giving you your nicotine hit with a smooth delicious flavour.
However, it is important to note that vaping should only be used as a method to quit smoking and we do not recommened starting vaping if you are not already a smoker. There are various laws around the world, and it is also important to ask quesitons like "How old do you need to be to vape" in case you are under the legal limit, as well as is vaping right for me?
What is a vape?
Vapes are handheld devices, that when inhaled, produce vapour and deliver nicotine to the user much like a normal cigarette would. There are many different types of vapes which vary in size, power and battery life. A vape can be customised to any flavour and strength using a variety of different vape juice. Some devices also allow you to adjust airflow and power, while the use of different coils ohms changes how much flavour and vapour they produce.
There are many different types of vape pens available, the most common are:
Disposable Vapes: a quick and easy way to vape. Simply open them up and start vaping.
Rechargeable Disposable Vapes (Pod Vapes): Known as rechargeable disposable vapes, they are a two-piece device made up of a rechargeable battery and a replaceable flavour pod.
Vape Pens:
The classic vape pen design with a refillable tank and changeable coil, placed on top of a rechargable battery.
Box Mods:
Then you have Box Mods, usually the largest and most powerful vapes. A Box Mod usually has features that allow you to customise wattage & temperature and are usually for experienced vapers.
How does a vape work?
A vape has many parts that all come together to form a vape. Neither of these single parts is a vape, they all have to work together to provide that vaping experience.
A vape device is usually comprised of a battery, a heating element (coil), an atomiser, a tank and a mouth tip. The journey starts at the battery, which powers the coil within the atomiser, which heats up the e-liquid stored in the tank producing vapour to the mouth tip.

Step By Step Guide How to Start Vaping
When you start to vape for the first time, you may want to know how to vape properly. If you’re new to vaping, it’s probably best to keep it simple when it comes to choosing your vape kit. While there is nothing wrong with going straight to an advanced or expert device, it’s worth getting to know your vaping preferences first and ensuring you know how to vape.
How to vape - Step 1 - Which vape device?
The first Step is to get your hands on a vape starter kit. Try to stick to no more than £30 for your first vape starter kit. There are lots of different styles and variations of starter kits, however we recommend sticking to the simpler versions including:
Pod Vapes – Prefilled / Refillable Disposable Cartridges such as the Puff Box.
AIO Vape – All In One Vape, Replaceable Coils and Refillable, such as the SERIES-S17 AIO.
Disposable Vapes – Prefilled, disposable device.
Our Starting Recommendation - The Puff Box
We recommend starting off with the Puff Box, the rechargeable disposable vape for a few reasons, the main reasons being:
• Incredibly user friendly for new vapers, simply twist-in a refill and go
• Delivers a smooth, delicious vapour
• Affordable, at around 50% cheaper than other disposable vapes
• Rechargeable and reusable, with 650 mAh battery
• Compact, pocket sized design
Purchasing a Puff Box, or a rechargeale disposable vape, removes a lot of the bug bears of starting vaping, like learning how to prime and change a coil, choosing the right vape juice etc etc. This means you are much more likely to stick to your quit smoking journey. If or when you're ready to move onto something more customisable, then we're here to help with that too with our other vape pens.
The Puff Box uses twist-in refills, which contain the vape juice and coil, so all you need to do is simply twist them into the device and you are ready to go. They are also fitted with Automatic Activation technology, so you don't even need to press a button.
The Puff Box is available in three different colours as seen above, meaning there is one for every outfit and occasion. There are six flavours to choose from for your refills, which is plenty to allow you to experiment with vape flavours before committing to one you're not sure you like. Plus, if you're not feeling the flavour you have in, you can simply twist it out and put in a different one and be on your way.
Not only is the Puff Box the perfect compact vaping device for beginners and everyday vapers, it is also 50% cheaper than other disposable vapes on the market, coming in at around 43p per 100 puffs rather than just over 80p. With all that, as the Puff Box is USB-C rechargeable and uses refills, there is a lot less plastic and lithium waste hitting the landfills, win win!
How to vape - Using the Puff Box
The Puff Box is an extremely easy-to-use rechargeable disposable vape, simply open the packaging, remove the rubber plugs from the flavoured refill and twist it into the device. That's it! There is no need to prime or change coils, top up vape juice or anything else.
During use, we recommend starting off with long yet shallow drags on the Puff Box to get used to device and allowing the coil to heat up. Once you have gotten used to the vape, you can start taking longer, deeper drags as you would on cigarettes.
Once the refill has run out, simply twist it out and twist in a new one. If the Puff Box runs out of battery, simply plug in a USB-C cable connected to a power source and it will be recharged within around 60 minutes.
How to vape - Step 2 - Understanding your device - Non-disposables
Once you’ve chosen your preferred vape starter kit, you’ll need to know how to use the device. All JAC Vapour vape devices come with a handy user manual to keep you right, and most other devices should too. However, be aware that not all devices are designed here in the UK like JAC Vapour's are, so some instructions may be in broken English.
If you’ve decided not to go with a rechargeable disposable for your first device and have opted for a refillable vape pen, then there are a few things you need to know.
Your instructions should show you how to change the coil (if needed) and how to refill the device with vape juice. If it doesn’t, a quick google search should be able to fix the problem. If it’s a JAC Vapour device you’ve bought and you need a hand, then you can speak to our excellent customer service team live on our website.
How to vape - Step 3 - Choosing your vape juice
Next is to make sure you’ve got the best vape juice for you if you’ve purchased a refillable vape device. There are many different things to know about e-liquids, including what the VG PG ratio is, different nicotine strengths, bases and of course, flavour.
The most important thing is to make sure you pick a flavour that appeals to you. Usually there are three different flavour categories; Menthol, Tobacco and Fruit. However you can also get dessert flavoured e-liquids too.
Once you’ve found your flavour, you’ll see that you have a choice of bases, nicotine levels and PG / VG Ratios.
When it comes to vape juice bases, the type of base usually refers to a PG / VG ratio. If you want to know more about the PG / VG Ratios and what the mean, check out our handy guide.
When selecting a PG or VG Base, this usually means that the VG / PG ratio is 70/30 or 30/70. The 50/50 Base, like our 50/50 vape juice range, means that the ratio is 50/50 pg/vg. The Pure VG and Pure PG are 100/0 for each representative.
A different type of base would be Nic Salt. This base uses Nicotine Salts which are perfect for those who are trying to quit smoking and still want that cigarette sensation and quick nicotine delivery.
For those looking to be a bit more discreet, then there are Vapourless vape juice's available, a base designed for pure discretion. A vapourless vape juice does what is says on the tin, it produces no vapour on exhale. This means you can vape secretly without anyone knowing and beat the bans.
Finally there is nicotine strength, this should be influenced by how much daily nicotine you already intake. If you don’t know what nicotine level you should use, base it on how many cigarettes you currently smoke daily. While there are nicotine free vape liquid available, these are more for once you have progress further on your quit nicotine journey. Based on this we recommend:
Around 20 A Day: Higher Nicotine Level - 18mg+
Around 10 A Day: Medium Nicotine Level - Around 12mg
Less Than 10 A Day: Low Nicotine Level – Around 6mg
How to vape - Step 4 - How to inhale a vape
How to 'drag' on an e-cigarette
- Firstly, you should try to take long (3-5 secs), steady draws and avoid quick shallow pulls. Long, steady draws allow plenty of time for the coil to heat properly and vaporise the e-liquid. This maximises the amount of vapour produced.
- Quick, shallow pulls on the other hand prevent the coil from reaching operating temperature, resulting in poor vapour production and possibly leakage from the mouthpiece as un-vaporised e-liquid is trapped in the centre chamber.
A key difference of vaping as opposed to smoking is the ability to vape as much as you want before setting your vape device down.
With traditional tobacco cigarettes, you are able to light up and continue to smoke until the cigarette is finished. However with vape devices, there really isn't must stopping you from puffing all day long. We recommend that you don't do this of course. We recommend taking only taking a few puffs at a time steadily throughout the day, or limiting your self to a "vape break", much like you would with a traditional cigarette. With your new vape, if you want to just take a couple of drags, you can.
